Welcome to the homepage of the 50th anniversary of the residential college system at Rice University!
This website was created not only to mark the anniversary and history of the beloved college system -- students began moving into the newly christened colleges, Will Rice, Baker, Wiess, Hanszen, and Jones in March and April 1957 -- but also to allow the members of the Rice community to contribute their own special memories, photographs, and documents to an online archive that will benefit Rice for years to come. Use the timeline at the bottom of the homepage or use the search features above, and you will find that the website already contains many pages of documentary and photographic records. We invite you to contribute to this collection as well.
Origins
If you are interested in learning more about the founding of the residential college system, visit the Origins link to read original documents, including the 1956 report that guided the colleges' creation and the history of the college system written by students in 1990.
Calendar
Additionally, this website serves as your information source for all of the upcoming anniversary celebrations. University-wide celebrations will begin March 22 and extend through Homecoming in November 2007. Celebrations at individual colleges will begin as early as February 23.
